I am not going to lie and tell you that water and I have the best relationship... because, frankly, it just is not that tasty to me. Until of course you add some fresh slices of lemon, or even a slice of watermelon and a couple drops of lemon essential oil; then I'm all over it. Whether it is my beverage of choice, or something I would prefer to be carbonated and sugar filled, there are countless benefits to drinking water. Not only does your body need this crystal, clear refresher, but it can do wonders for your skincare.
Now, we all know that anytime you travel down the rabbit hole of health and diet improvement one of the first things you always will be advised is to drink enough water. Today we are going to focus on your skin and all the ways water affects its health and appearance. What happens to your skin if you do not drink enough water? Well, like many other components of your body, like your heart, kidney, lungs, etc, your skin is an organ. When you leave it needing water, it cannot thrive and function properly. Your skin is the barrier that works to prevent bodily dehydration, and if it is deprived of water it cannot perform its functions.
One amazing feature of water is that it flushes your system of toxins. Much like the health benefits of the facial roller (which you know I love), water cleanses the body of bacteria minimizing pore clogging, and breakouts. If your skin is dehydrated it can cause dryness and premature aging. Similarly, it can also cause an over-production of oils. When you deprive the skin of water, you weaken the layers that act as a barrier and it can cause an overproduction of sebum (the oil produced by your skin).There is a delicate dance that is done with water and oil balance; selecting the right moisturizer will help you here, but we will save that topic for another post.
So how much water should you be drinking on a daily basis? The suggested amount is around 2 liters of water. A few of my favorite ways to encourage water consumption are to drop a few lemon essential oil drops in the bottle with some pureed water melon and make sure it is cold. Carrying a water bottle around with you during the day can be a great reminder, too! It is important that you encourage yourself to make water drinking a habit. Consistent hydration is vital to seeing results within your skin.
